Mountaineering and ice

Stay together on glaciers, ridges and ski tours

In the mountains the mobile signal is often gone exactly where it would matter. Crew Guard doesn't need it: the team's phones talk to each other directly over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and pass messages along the line. If someone is separated, everyone knows, and the map shows where they were last heard.

How it works

  1. Join the team with one QR code before you set off.
  2. Start the guard. It's armed as long as it's on. Choose a longer alarm time (10 or 15 minutes) for terrain where the team spreads out.
  3. Someone is separated. A first warning on the other phones, then a loud alert: “Separated, last seen here”, with the position, an arrow and the distance.

Made for the mountains

  • No signal needed: the phones relay for each other, so a team spread along a ridge or a ski descent stays connected as long as each one hears a neighbour.
  • Going ahead: someone skiing ahead to scout or climbing a pitch out of range can tell the others for 30 minutes to 4 hours.
  • Battery: GPS every 30 seconds at walking pace, with the screen off. Phones low on battery stop relaying and only report themselves.

What it isn't

Crew Guard doesn't replace an avalanche transceiver, a rope or a beacon, and it doesn't call rescue services. It tells the team quickly that someone is missing and where to start looking.
